Lessons with James
I've been teaching for over 15 years and have a busy practice covering students from complete beginners to advanced players on trumpet, trombone, jazz improvisation, composition and music theory. You can use the form on the left to enquire about lessons.
I teach both in person from my dedicated studio in South Glasgow, and online, making full use of music technology to create a rewarding experience for students. Through remote teaching, I've worked with students as far apart as New Zealand and the Caribbean.
I have a highly student-centered approach, with every student receiving individualised guidance and resources. My approach draws not just on repertoire and technical knowledge, but also on psychology, neuroscience, physical practices and music technology.
Every student receives dedicated online lesson notes after every lesson, incorporating a mix of online resources, written explanations, notated exercises and links to supporting materials.
Although I welcome students of all ages, backgrounds and interests, I particularly specialise in working with adult learners.
My qualifications:
MA, Music, University of Cambridge (2011)
MMus, Jazz Trumpet Performance,
Guildhall School of Music and Drama (2016)
PGCert with Distinction, Performance Teaching, Guildhall School of Music and Drama (2018)
Organisations I work with include:
Orchestras for All, Royal Opera House, Wigmore Hall, National Youth Orchestra, National Children's Orchestra, Saffron Centre for Young Musicians, Sage Gateshead
