James is in demand as an expert interpreter of complex arranging briefs and known for producing scores and parts of the highest presentational standards, delivered quickly. Clients include the Royal Opera House, Wigmore Hall, Classic FM, Dorling Kindersley, S4C, Gabrieli Consort and Tri-Borough Music Hub, and he has collaborated with composers including Charlotte Harding, John Barber and Scott Stroman.

 

He has contributed to RPS and Ivor Novello Award-winning work and has received a PRSf Composer-in-Residency and Ivors Academy profile.​ James was Winner of the 2018 Eddie Harvey Award for Jazz Arranging, Runner Up, Dankworth Composition Competition 2017, and Highly Commended, echo Choral Composition Competition 2019.​​

​James studied composition at the University of Cambridge with Robin Holloway and Jeremy Thurlow and Jazz Composition and Arranging at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Scott Stroman and Iain Ballamy.​​
