James is a multi-faceted, multi-instrumental performer with roots in jazz trumpet and particularly the music of New Orleans and Brazil. On trumpet and flugelhorn, James is known for expressive, vibrant playing and is equally at home in improvising and reading contexts. James has collaborated with artists across the jazz, classical, folk and pop worlds, including Laura Mvula, the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Paul Towndrow, Zoe Rahman, Le Vent du Nord and the Choir of King's College Cambridge. James plays trumpet, flugelhorn, melodica, keyboards, percussion and trombone.
Since 2021, James has been based in Glasgow, and plays an active role in the vibrant musical life of Scotland, including with regular collaborators such as Stu Brown, Mario Caribé and Chris Greive. He also travels widely in the UK and abroad with touring bands and artists, including performances in China, Turkey, Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and the United States.
James has an MA in Music from the University of Cambridge and an Artist Masters in Jazz Performance from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
